Sephora has really gone downhill lately

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Policy requires returning items to get a refund; no cancellations after 15 minutes.
  • - Return was lost; they said I owe money due to old chargebacks.

Sephora has really gone downhill lately. I would warn everyone out there not to shop there.

Their policy is that if there are any issues with the order, I have to receive the order and return it to get my money back. There are no order cancellations past 15 minutes for any reason (even order modifications on their end that were not approved by me such as last minute items going out of stock). So that happened to me, and I returned the package of items that I tried to cancel as instructed by customer service. It ended up being lost and went to the wrong warehouse.

2 weeks later after calling customer service, a representative told me that actually, they were not going to refund me for the return because I "owe them money." She said that they found in their system I have previous credit card chargebacks. Those chargebacks were so old and decided in my favor because of similar customer service problems. But this is the first time a company representative has told me, "you owe us money" so we are keeping your return. That was really weird and creeped me out.

Over time I can see why more brands are moving to other retailers.

They have become really sketchy. I would never shop here again.

They do owe you the refund but it sounds like shopping online isn’t for you.

The way I was treated in a store

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Tried to return a Mother's Day gift; store required a beauty insider.
  • - Cash refund split with store credit after corporate; staff were disrespectful.

A problem in the store with a return did call what I thought was corporate office. They gave me a INT number 00171****.

Was trying to return a Mothers Day gift that was fairly expensive. My husband that bought it for me was asked if he was a beauty insider of course being a man he said no paid cash for my gift. Got a receipt and left eye today. Wanted to return the gift I was told without being a beauty insider that was not possible.

Ask the store that I was at if I could please have corporates phone number which she gave when I call corporate. They told me that was not true and I even googled it so before we accept all returns with a receipt within 60 days was going back to the store to return my item and was told after I told the woman that Im sorry I think she had the wrong information that I could have my money back. She told me that she did not have enough money in the store so therefore she could not help me then I called corporate again while she was standing there and told corporate you know Ill even take half store credit half cash something that she never offered me. She then got a complete attitude with me like I did something wrong actually told me she was going to hit me that she had a step away from the counter before she hit somebody who was at somebody.

The only person she couldve been talking about was me!!! I got an IT number cause I spoke with somebody from corporate and told me they will try to resolve my problem. I did resolve my problem. I told him I got half cash half credit for the store, but honestly, I dont want credit to their store.

I dont think Ill ever shopping in a Sephora again I shouldve never been treated like that. Their employee had the wrong information and treated me with disrespect telling me I could not return a product because my husband did not provide a phone number part of the beauty program I am very displeased with how I was treated tonight honestly because even when I took the product back, all I want was the point I told I was told I could not return the item I would like someone to talk to someone

User's recommendation: be careful when returning things

Extremely poor customer service !!

AI Highlights
  • - The store prioritizes product displays over customer service, and an employee spent 20-30 minutes to ring up a g card purchase.

Start by really caring about your customers rather than putting a extremely high emphasis on making room for display and less room for customer service. Separate Mgr and 2 employees said less room for customer service but more room for products instead.

2) a employee took between 20-30 minutes just to ring up a g card purchase! That's extremely pathetic

Selling Expired Makeup Leading to Severe Skin Reaction & Company’s Refusal to Replace

AI Highlights
  • - Expired product caused swelling, itching, blisters, and dark spots; batch shows expiry 8 months before purchase; Sephora denied refund.
Updated by user Mar 12, 2025

Sephora refunded my purchase money and received an expense sheet that they are reviewing.

Original review Feb 24, 2025
Upon using the product, I experienced severe swelling, itching, blistering, and dark spots, which required medical attention, antibiotics, and ongoing skincare treatments. After checking the product's batch code and expiration details, I discovered that it had already expired 8 months before I purchased it.

This means I unknowingly applied a harmful, expired product to my skin. Upon realizing the source of my reaction and the expiration date, I contacted both Sephora and Laura Mercier's Customer Service to report the issue and request a refund or replacement.

However, Sephora denied any resolution on the grounds that the purchase was made over 30 days ago, even though the product they sold me was already unsafe at the time of purchase. Laura Mercier investigated and stated that Sephora would need to address the issue.
Loss:
$500
Pros:
  • Are close
Cons:
  • Sell expired products that cause damage to the skin

Preferred solution: Medical Expenses: Skin Damage & Prolonged Recovery:requiring continuous treatments. Reimburses for Costs: I have had to purchase numerous skincare products such as lotions, soaps, and creams to manage the ongoing irritation.

User's recommendation: Check the dates on EVERYTHING Purchased from Sephora

Any problems you are experiencing is a result of an allergic reaction and not because the product (which you failed to identify) was "expired". It sounds like you are trying to get some extra coin in your pocket over this. Tsk tsk.

Considering the product was expired and I used it while my skin began to itch and swell. Of course I did not think it was my make up but everything else I was using which was natural.

I submitted before and after pics in my initial contact with sephora and was ignored. I also submitted a picture of my antibiotics because my skin became infected which required a doctors appointment. since i have melanated and sensitive skin my issue has been ongoing for months after my daughter purchased my make up online as a gift. I was not completely out of my other and didnt start using it right away when she purchased in August.

I have purchased products, gone to the doctor, taken antibiotics and from Benadryl to calamine lotion have attempted to soothe my red, blistering, inflamed skin that now has pigmentation spots from my horrible break out. Do me a favor and dont comment on my post again. youre an idiot who has not idea what I have been through.

And yes using a product on my skin that was sold 8 months after expiration is a problem. My hyperpigmentation will take a long time to go away.

Store credit issue

AI Highlights
  • - Return at Sephora inside Kohl's; refund issued on a Kohl's gift card.
  • - The gift card cannot be used on Sephora.com and is invalid.

I made a purchase return at Sephora in the Kohls store. I wanted to order the Dr.

gross lip plumper but it was not in stock. The clerk gave me a refund in a Kohls gift card. I attempted to use the refund gift card on sephora.com but was unsuccessful. The card was invalid.

When I called Sephora in Kohls they stated that I could only use it in the Kohls store. They transferred me to a manager at Kohls who also advised me that I can only use the gift card at Kohls, not at Sephora. They mentioned they cannot refund me any of the funds, which means now I do not have the product that I want and nor can I purchase it from Sephora online or any Sephora store directly.

I have a Kohls credit that I do not plan to use at the moment because I wanted it for my Sephora purchase to purchase the Doctor gross lip pumper. I was not informed of this during my return transaction.

I purchased a gift card for my daughter at the store inside a Kohls. When my daughter sctatched the silver strip over the card numbers and tried to order something the card came back unavailable.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Card charged $0.40 on 8/4/24 and $40.80 on 8/5/34.
  • - Daughter wasn’t given the card until 8/4/24.
  • - Support cites privacy; notes a scratch-off scam.

I took the card and my receipt back to where I bought it, and the girl said that after some investigation, the card was already used up the whole $50. She said that on 8/4/24 a purchase of .40 was made and then $40.80 on 8/5/34 another purchase of $8.80 was made.

I didn't even give this card to my daughter until the night of 8/4/24! The woman at Sephora told me that there's nothing she can do—basically, oh well, too bad! I called the main number for Sephora, and the representative told me that there's a scam happening where people scratch off the numbers, record the information, then replace the silver scratch-off area with a paint marker or something.

She said it happens a lot at Sephora because the cards are not behind the counter and anyone has access to them. Once again, her reply was, 'Sorry, Charlie,' they wouldn't even look up the transactions, they said it was an invasion of privacy?

Loss:

Pros:
  • Nice products
Cons:
  • Management that passes the buck to get out of paying back customers

Preferred solution: Full refund

User's recommendation: Do not purchase gift cards here!

Great Customer Service response!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Sephora Canada CS was very nice and there was no wait time.
  • - They fixed it quickly and said they'd contact the owner, and you can return it or keep it.

Called Sephora today (Canadian). Customer service was very nice and I had zero wait time!

They were quick to resolve my issue; I received an item that wasn't mine and wanted to give them a heads up if the bereaved customer made a report. The service worker assured me that they would be contacting the customer personally to resolve it and that I didn't need to worry. They also said I could return the item to a Sephora store (or request a shipping label), but I could also keep it if I wanted.

Very nice guy. I hope the customer receives their item!!

Pros:
  • Fast shipping
  • Good quality items
Cons:
  • Small quantities
  • Expensive

Preferred solution: Nothing

User's recommendation: Honestly? Treat them kindly. Give them the same treatment you'd expect to receive from them: be warm, friendly, and cooperative.
